In the realm of opulence and architectural innovation, a unique project has emerged, blending the world of high-end automobiles with the tranquility of a residential swimming pool. Nestled in the waterfront properties of South Florida, a cutting-edge pool, dubbed the “Lambo Pool,” has been crafted to showcase a homeowner’s Lamborghini in a mesmerizing aquatic display. This extraordinary venture was a collaboration between Foxterra Design, Custom Pool Systems, and Jonny Nalepa, a distinguished pool professional and aquatics engineer from Smart Aquatics.

A consultant on projects throughout the Sunshine state, Nalepa’s burgeoning firm Smart Aquatics recently had the opportunity to collaborate on numerous high profile projects, the latest was completed several months ago and has already begun turning heads.

Swimming Pool Built to Showcase a $250K Lamborghini

“The Lambo Pool” project, as Jonny Nalepa affectionately calls it, was brought to life through the vision of entrepreneur Alex Moeller, a passionate car enthusiast and homeowner in Davie, Florida. Moeller’s desire was to seamlessly integrate his prized Lamborghini Aventador SVJ into his backyard, an idea that prompted him to engage the expertise of Foxterra Design.

Foxterra Design, led by the innovative duo Justin and Nate, known for their wild and incredible designs, took on the challenge of creating a pool that would not only house the luxurious vehicle but also serve as a breathtaking water feature. The project was further brought to fruition by Custom Pool Systems, the builders responsible for transforming the conceptual design into a tangible reality.

Jonny Nalepa, in his role as a consultant, played a crucial part in transposing Foxterra Design’s conceptual renderings into a working set of construction drawings that Custom Pool Systems used to physically build the pool. With the Lamborghini being a high-value asset, Nalepa and his team took meticulous steps to prevent any potential damage. This involved extensive research, including reaching out to Lamborghini to obtain precise measurements and specifications for the vehicle.

Technical Challenges Bringing The Project To Fruition

“With a vehicle that’s probably over $250,000, we wanted to make sure that we didn’t damage the car by making the water too deep or when the car is driving over the perimeter overflow there,” said Nalepa, “I mean, there’s a slot with a gutter underneath, so we have a cantilevered condition. We got to make sure this thing’s going to work right.”

“This one happened to be on a grass edge, but we also had to make sure that we could support the vehicle going over this perimeter overflow as many times as the client wanted to move it, ” explained Nalepa.

“We took Foxterra’s design and we developed it to make sure that we met all the setbacks and the codes and everything for Miami. We did our due diligence and were pretty thorough. We looked up the actual model, make and model of the vehicle. We measured the height of it. We measured the width of the wheels, because there are some bubblers in that area where the car is parked. So we don’t want the car to drive over the bubblers, or at the very least, if the car does drive over them, we don’t want them to crack because most pool fixtures are plastic,” said Nalepa.

Going The Extra Mile To Research

In his detailed explanation, Nalepa mentioned, “We contacted Lamborghini, and we got all the specifications. We confirmed what the max slope was. The car can go up and down and left and right. And we wanted to make sure that we had enough water to overflow this feature so that you could visually see that it’s a water feature.”

“We had to modify what our typical perimeter overflow detail is,” explained Nalepa, “there’s a gutter beneath, in this case, a stainless steel overhang. It’s like an L bracket almost that overhangs a gutter and comes almost right up against the pool structure. So all you see is a little strip, but in the area where the car goes over, we didn’t want to have a full overhang of six or eight inches.”

“The car is pretty heavy, and you never know what’s going to happen,” said Nalepa, “someone could park it and stop. The back wheels could be sitting on that overhang, so we had to account for that and beef up the structure on that side.”

Thinking Around Corners

The way this was done is pretty ingenious, according to Nalepa. “We removed the drop piping from that entry area and wanted to make sure that the structure was robust enough so we got rid of all the PVC plumbing that goes in a typical perimeter overflow edge condition. Doing it that way we could increase the structural integrity of the concrete. We kind of made it a minimal gutter where the overhang is only a few inches.”

“We went through a couple of different iterations, by the way, before we landed on that one. In the end, it’s kind of a simple solution to achieve the look Foxterra was going for,” said Nalepa.

Despite the difficult technical challenges, the Lambo Pool was a resounding success. Nalepa expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “We were excited to work on this project, but it was definitely a challenging one.”

“Lambo Pool” Collaboration Rolled Out a Winner

One of the standout moments for Nalepa was the opportunity to drive the Lamborghini onto the feature, a surreal experience for any car enthusiast. Reflecting on the uniqueness of the project, he remarked, “It’s so far out of something that you can dream up, the fact that Foxterra was like, ‘Let’s put it in the pool.’ Most people may have just parked it next to the pool or something like that, but they went for it.”

Custom Pool Systems also knocked it out of the park on this project. “The perimeter overflow is impressive. There are no dry spots. They did an incredible job executing and building this project. There’s a level of craftsmanship that you can see a mile away. It looks and feels expensive and that’s through material selections and just the way the mitered edges are and devils in the details kinds of things,” said Nalepa.

The Lambo Pool stands as a testament to the collaborative efforts of talented professionals in the fields of design, construction, and aquatics engineering. It exemplifies the intersection of luxury, creativity, and meticulous planning, resulting in a truly extraordinary fusion of automotive and aquatic excellence.

Looking for pool inspiration? The enchanting landscape of Cádiz, Spain is the perfect backdrop for Villa 95, emerging as a masterpiece of contemporary architecture. The unique pool and outdoor living design is captivating professionals with its exquisite aesthetic. Crafted by the visionary team at Fran Silvestre Arquitectos, this unique design showcases the seamless integration of modern living with the surrounding natural beauty.

The inspiring essence of Villa 95 lies in its expressive Z-shaped three-story structure, a continuous movement that beckons residents to embark on a journey of exploration through its various rooms. The unique zig-zag design is eloquently summarized by the architects themselves, stating, “The expressive nature of this three-story house is designed in a continuous movement that suggests, between its different rooms, a walkway from where to explore the landscape that expands in front of it.”

Zig Zag Design

One of the most distinctive features of Villa 95 is its exterior morphology, strategically arranged to maximize the utilization of its plot. The architectural elements, resembling a long diagonal arrangement, appear to connect only at their vertexes. However, within this seemingly disjointed exterior lies an intricate internal network of interconnected spaces, fostering constant communication between different parts of the residence.

The upper floor of Villa 95 unfolds to reveal a sprawling balcony, serving as both the roof of the middle section and an expansive vantage point. The limits of this elevated space extend in two directions, reaching outwards to embrace the lure of a smartly appointed outdoor living area and stretching inwards to the confines of the plot, seamlessly blending with the upper level of the house.

What sets Villa 95 apart is its tertiary configuration and the uninterrupted succession of spaces, inviting the observer to follow the playful figure that defines its shape. This almost whimsical yet sophisticated geometry not only creates a visually captivating aesthetic but also establishes the distinct identity of the house.

Juxtaposing Pools

6 Reasons Why This Pool Design Is Inspiring

1. Aesthetic Harmony with Landscape:

Villa 95’s design seamlessly integrates with the surrounding landscape of Cádiz. The pools, strategically positioned to overlook different parts of the property, contribute to the aesthetic harmony between the built environment and the natural surroundings.

2. Innovative Use of Elevation:

The placement of the vanishing edge pools at different juxtaposing elevations is a stroke of genius. This not only adds an element of drama and visual interest but also showcases a keen understanding of topography. We’re inspired by the elevation play, as it challenges the conventional flat pool design, demonstrating how thoughtful consideration of different levels can elevate the overall pool experience.

3. Architectural Integration:

Villa 95’s Z-shape geometry and the integration of multiple pools within the structure are a showcase of the successful fusion of architecture and aquatic design. It’s inspiring to see architects treat pools not just as mere accessories but as integral components of the overall design. This approach encourages them to think beyond the pool as a standalone feature and consider it as an integral part of the larger architectural canvas.

4. Spatial Flow and Connectivity:

The uninterrupted succession of spaces and the continuous movement of the design create a sense of spatial flow. It’s easy to appreciate the interconnectedness of the different areas, as it suggests a holistic approach to outdoor living. Today’s leading designers are exploring methods that promote connectivity between various poolside spaces and the broader architectural context, this project is a perfect example of how this has come into play.

Modern Indoor Pool Design

5. Distinctive Identity:

Villa 95’s playful yet sophisticated geometry gives the property a distinctive identity. The inspired design showcased how pools located throughout the entire property can contribute significantly to the overall character of a residence. This design concept truly embraces the concept of making the entire home an oasis.

6. Luxurious Panoramic Views:

The strategic placement of the vanishing edge pools offer breathtaking panoramic views of the landscape. Today’s homeowners are drawn to the idea of swimming pools that not only serve as recreational spaces but also as vantage points, providing residents with a luxurious visual experience. This focus on the overall experience inspires one to consider pools as immersive elements within the broader living environment.

Today’s Modern Swimming Pool

The history of swimming pools dates back thousands of years, with early examples found in ancient civilizations such as the Greeks and Romans. However, it wasn’t until the 19th century that swimming pools became more common in Western society. The growth of leisure time and the emergence of the middle class led to the popularity of private swimming pools.

Today’s modern swimming pools are characterized by a variety of features and amenities that go beyond their basic function. Infinity edges, waterfalls, underwater lighting, and unique shapes are just a few examples. These features not only enhance the visual appeal but also contribute to a sensory experience for those enjoying the pool.

Principles of Modern Pool Design

Several principles guide the design of modern swimming pools, ensuring they align with contemporary aesthetics and functionality:

 1. Integration with Surroundings: Modern pools are designed to seamlessly blend with their surroundings, whether it’s a natural landscape or an urban setting. This integration enhances the overall visual appeal and creates a harmonious environment.
 2. Customization and Innovation: Designers are pushing boundaries with innovative shapes, materials, and features. Customization is key, as pools are tailored to meet the specific needs and preferences of the space they occupy.
 3. Sustainability: Environmental consciousness has influenced modern pool design, leading to the implementation of sustainable features such as energy-efficient pumps, solar heating, and water-saving technologies.
 4. Technology Integration: Automation and smart technology play a significant role in modern pool design. Remote control systems, LED lighting, and advanced filtration systems contribute to ease of maintenance and enhance the user experience.
 5. Wellness Focus: Pools are increasingly designed with health and wellness in mind. Features like swim jets, resistance currents, and designated areas for water aerobics contribute to a holistic approach to fitness.

The Evolution of the Modern Pool in Residential Outdoor Living Spaces

The traditional rectangular pool, once a staple in residential backyards, has given way to a myriad of contemporary shapes and designs. Homeowners and designers are embracing freeform pools, kidney-shaped designs, and even infinity edges that create a seamless visual connection with the surrounding landscape. This departure from conventional shapes adds an artistic flair to the backyard and enhances the overall aesthetics of the space.

Modern pool design goes beyond the pool itself, emphasizing the integration of the pool area with outdoor living spaces. Patios, decks, and lounge areas are strategically incorporated to create a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor living. The result is a cohesive and inviting environment that encourages socializing, relaxation, and entertainment.

Designer creating a modern and contemporary swimming pool design.

Technological Advancements

Water features have become a hallmark of modern pool designs, introducing elements like cascading waterfalls, bubbling fountains, and elegant water spouts. These features not only enhance the visual appeal but also contribute to a soothing auditory experience. Additionally, technological advancements have brought innovations such as smart pool systems, LED lighting, and energy-efficient filtration, making pool maintenance more convenient and environmentally friendly.

Materials and Finishes

Gone are the days when pools were limited to basic blue tiles. Modern pool design places a strong emphasis on materials and finishes that complement the overall aesthetic of the home. Glass tiles, natural stone, and mosaic patterns are popular choices, adding texture and depth to the pool’s visual appeal. The pool’s surroundings are also carefully curated, with options ranging from lush landscaping to sleek, minimalist finishes.

Wellness and Fitness Focus

As health and wellness take center stage in contemporary living, modern pool designs often incorporate features catering to fitness and relaxation. Swim jets, resistance currents, and spa-like elements provide homeowners with opportunities for both exercise and rejuvenation, turning the backyard pool into a multifunctional space for well-being.

Sustainability and Eco-Friendly Designs

With a growing emphasis on sustainability, modern pool designs often integrate eco-friendly features. Saltwater systems, solar heating, and energy-efficient pumps contribute to a reduced environmental footprint, aligning the pool with the principles of responsible living.

Rethinking Resorts, Hotels, and Commercial Spaces

Commercial spaces, particularly hotels and resorts, have witnessed a transformative journey in the realm of modern pool designs. What was once a simple amenity has evolved into a focal point of architectural innovation, offering guests not only a refreshing dip but an immersive and visually stunning experience. In this article, we’ll dive into the evolution of modern pool design in commercial applications and explore how this evolution has permeated various water features in these spaces.

Architectural Integration and Ambiance

Modern hotels and resorts have shifted from treating pools as mere functional components to integral elements of the overall architectural design. Pools are now seamlessly integrated into the landscape, often reflecting the natural surroundings. Infinity pools that appear to merge with the horizon, rooftop pools with panoramic city views, and pools with unique shapes are all examples of how architects are using these aquatic features to enhance the ambiance and overall aesthetic of commercial spaces.

Artistic Elements and Unique Shapes

The demand for visually striking and unique designs has given rise to pools that double as works of art. Commercial spaces are increasingly incorporating pools with intricate mosaic designs, artistic tiling, and even sculptures that serve both functional and aesthetic purposes. Unique shapes, such as irregular geometries and freeform designs, are becoming more prevalent, adding an element of surprise and sophistication to the overall pool experience.

Multi-Functional Spaces

Modern pool designs in commercial settings often go beyond traditional swimming areas. They are now part of multi-functional spaces that include lounging areas, cabanas, and even outdoor dining zones. These versatile spaces cater to diverse guest preferences, providing areas for relaxation, socializing, and recreation. The poolside is no longer just about swimming; it’s a destination within the destination.

Innovative Water Features

The evolution of pool design in commercial spaces has led to a proliferation of innovative water features. Waterfalls, fountains, and interactive jets have become commonplace, creating a multisensory experience for guests. Some resorts even incorporate musical or choreographed water shows, elevating the entertainment value of the pool area.

The Future of Modern Pool Design

The evolution of modern pool designs has transcended the conventional boundaries of functionality, transforming these aquatic spaces into integral elements of contemporary living. Whether gracing the rooftops of urban skyscrapers, nestled in lush landscapes, or adorning the private sanctuaries of upscale homes, modern pools have become more than just recreational amenities—they are immersive experiences that harmonize with the surrounding environment.

As we continue to witness the convergence of architectural innovation, sustainability practices, and wellness-focused designs, the future promises even more exciting developments in the realm of pool design. From smart technologies and eco-friendly features to imaginative shapes and multi-functional spaces, the journey of modern pool design remains a dynamic exploration of form, function, and aesthetic appeal.

As homeowners, architects, and designers embark on this aquatic adventure, the contemporary pool stands not just as a symbol of luxury but as a testament to the ever-evolving synergy between human ingenuity and the natural world. Whether reflecting the skyline of a bustling city or mirroring the tranquility of a secluded retreat, modern pools have become canvases where lifestyle aspirations and design creativity converge, leaving an indelible mark on the landscapes of our leisure and architectural experiences. So, as we dive into the future, let the ripples of modern pool design continue to inspire, captivate, and redefine the essence of aquatic living.

Once upon a time, pool lighting was… well, not so exciting. White lights, while warm and inviting, used to be the only option for curating a welcoming nighttime oasis. The pool industry has come a long way!

In the beginning…

To understand this evolution, one must look back at the history of lighting in general. Our story begins in 1879 when Thomas Edison created an incandescent bulb that was practical and reliable enough to illuminate homes. The world was forever changed by this innovation, and other big-thinking inventors were inspired by the possibilities lighting offered. As tinkering was underway, new inventions began dazzling the public: arc lamps, oscillating lights, and even Christmas light strings were soon unveiled.

The American public, while still lighting many trees with candles, were awe-struck by this innovation. Lights brought a new warmth to homes across the nation, including the White House. In the 1890s, President Grover Cleveland decorated his holiday tree with multi-colored string lights. An awe-struck public watched in amazement as the possibilities of a colorful future sat in plain sight. The Edison Illuminating Company produced the first example of this dazzling multi-colored light show, but each light string had to be wired by hand. As a result, light strings were rather pricey for the everyday consumer.

Nonetheless, this largely forgotten moment in history inched us toward a more colorful future, both inside and outside the home. In the 1920s, the Jazz Age was underway, and a flair for the extravagant became en vogue. It was at this time that Albert Sadacca and his brothers set out to make colored lights more widely available, and the public was downright dazzled by this colorful experience that could be introduced to their own homes.

Diving into well-lit pools.

While innovations in lighting were transforming the world as we knew it, the young pool industry was also taking notice. Like lights, American pools were still a fairly young innovation in the early 20th century. Though Roman pools and natural hot springs had long entertained Europeans, American pools had only started popping up on the East Coast in the 1880s. Those early pools were a hit, and the ensuing century would introduce new swimsuit fashions that made swimming even more enjoyable.

At the height of the Jazz Age, a man by the name of Wesley Bintz began introducing public pools to the Midwest. In the following decade, wet-niche pool lights were introduced, and swimmers everywhere were dazzled by well-lit oases.

Pool lights continued to evolve over the next few decades, becoming better at distributing illumination underwater, maintaining a cool temperature for lightbulbs, and embracing new innovations like fiberoptic lighting. A burgeoning industry was underway, and the concept of the American Dream grew to include a well-lit, welcoming pool. After all, the white picket fence alone wasn’t enough to create a backyard paradise!

Wading into a colorful future.

Of course, the public had already demonstrated a fascination with colored lighting, as it had long been a staple inside homes. Naturally, the next step in the evolution of colored lights was infusing them into outdoor spaces like pools.

Colored lights enabled pool owners to curate a specific mood at their pool, enhancing holiday celebrations and pool parties in a magical way.

Transforming lighting into a light show.

While colored lighting transformed the pool industry as we know it, the era of innovation wasn’t (and still isn’t) quite over. Creative minds around the world were already pushing the boundaries of innovation, but automation further changed pool lighting as we know it.

Automation allows pool owners to connect equipment like pool pumps, water features, and – you guessed it – lighting in one easy-to-manage control center. In the smartphone era, connected apps like the Pentair Home and IntelliCenter2 app make pool automation as simple as the tap of a finger. Turning on and off pool features and setting schedules is made simple with an automation system. Plus, with automation or the Color Sync™ Controller for Pentair Color LED Lights in your pool toolkit, it’s easy to create an awe-inducing light show.

What is a light show, you ask? Instead of sitting with just one color, light shows cycle through several different colors to create a visually striking scene. Imagine painting your pool in hues of sunset magenta and yellow or creating a Caribbean ambiance with blue and green! Pool owners with colored lights can attest to the majesty of a rainbow-hued backyard oasis.

Another pillar of the modern pool industry is a trend toward sustainable solutions, and pool lights haven’t been forgotten in this wave of energy efficiency. With the incorporation of LED lighting solutions, homeowners can enjoy colorful outdoor paradises that won’t break the bank. And the best part? With each new generation of lighting, technology and energy efficiency improves.

The shift from incandescent to LED lighting.

Over the last few decades, LED lighting has been replacing older, less energy-efficient incandescent lights. This recent lighting evolution wave has been, in part, due to regulatory pressures from the Department of Energy which has banned certain types of low-efficiency incandescent lights from being sold in the market.

In the pool industry, advancements from incandescent to LED lighting took place in the mid-to-late 2000s. Pentair began utilizing LED technology in backyard poolscapes with its first LED IntelliBrite large niche light in 2007. After tweaking and improving the design of that initial LED product, Pentair came out with the IntelliBrite® 5G Color and White LED Pool Light, which has been illuminating backyard paradises across the country for over a decade. Now, Pentair will be introducing a new and improved LED lighting product with upgraded optics, power supply, and more.

What makes LED lighting that much better than incandescents? To understand why and how LED lights are more energy efficient than incandescent lighting, let’s take a deeper dive into the physics behind the light. An LED (which stands for light-emitting diode) is one type of semiconductor that converts electricity directly to light at a more efficient rate than incandescent lights, which actually burns a filament (the wire or thread in a light bulb) to produce light. For every watt of electricity, an LED produces much more light than heat compared to an incandescent, which is why you can change an LED light bulb while lit up – you can’t always do that with an incandescent bulb without burning your fingers.

Many of the energy efficiency and lighting differences between LED and incandescent lights stem from the use of optics – a lens or a reflector that changes the direction of the light beam. Optics direct the light to where it’s needed most. In an incandescent light, the light is directed omnidirectionally, meaning in three axes at 360 degrees. However, in an LED light, optics maximize the use of light by directing the photons only where the light is needed, which makes LED lighting that much more efficient.

Looking toward the future…

From the humble beginnings of lighting to its transformative days in early American pools, underwater lighting has come a long way. However, a trend toward sustainability and energy efficiency clues us in on what the future holds for the pool industry. There’s more innovation underway every day, and each new product unveiling has the potential to dazzle the industry just as the very first colored lights did.

When it comes to hosting unforgettable parties and get-togethers, having the perfect pool can elevate the entire experience to a whole new level. From swimming and soaking in a spa to sunbathing and enjoying a refreshing drink at a swim-up bar, the possibilities are endless. So, let’s dive into our guide to planning the ultimate party pool and discuss the art of planning the perfect pool for hosting epic parties!

Sector 1: The Swimming Zone

The heart of any party pool is undoubtedly the swimming area. A generously sized pool with a shallow end for socializing and a deeper end for serious swimmers should be at the core of your design. To add some flair, consider incorporating unique shapes or adding decorative elements like water features, underwater lighting, and mosaic tiles.

Sector 2: The Relaxing Spa Zone

A spa or hot tub area adjacent to the pool is a must-have for relaxation seekers at your party. A hot tub not only provides a soothing soak after an energetic swim but also offers a cozy place to unwind and socialize. Make sure the spa area is equipped with comfortable seating and provides privacy when needed.

Sector 3: The Sunbathing Haven

For those who prefer to soak up the sun, create a spacious sunbathing zone with luxurious loungers and umbrellas. Ensure there’s ample space around the pool deck to accommodate sunbathers without crowding the pool area. To add a touch of resort-style luxury, consider using high-quality materials for the deck, such as natural stone or composite wood.

Sector 4: The Entertaining Hub

To keep the party going, a designated entertaining area is essential. Incorporate a swim-up bar with stools immersed in the water, allowing guests to socialize without ever leaving the pool. A poolside cabana or gazebo can offer shade, while a well-equipped outdoor kitchen or BBQ station ensures everyone is well-fed and hydrated throughout the festivities.

Top 20 Must-Have Features for the Ultimate Party Pool:

Recently a video of Tieleman Pool Technology went absolutely viral with over 13 million views on Pool Magazine’s TikTok and over 14 million views on Tieleman’s Instagram account. The video showed a residential movable floor of 8.80 x 5.65m (28.87 x 18.54ft) in an indoor pool located in the United Kingdom. “We know we are engineering and installing a unique product that we felt would amaze many people, but we never imagined it would blow up like this,” says Marijn, Project Manager of the Netherlands-based manufacturer Tieleman Pool Technology.

“This is engineering from another planet… how does that work?”

Just one of the many comments given to the video of the movable floor. Of course, going viral with a video like this will lead to getting countless questions. Questions such as where does the water go when you lower the floor, what system is beneath the movable floor deck and much more. Below you will find some of the most frequently asked questions answered.

 • What happens when you lower the floor?

The movable floor is a safe and rigid floating platform controlled by means of a push button, touch screen or a mobile device. When you push the button to lower the floor, the water hydraulic cylinder pulls the movable floor underwater. When the floor is moved, the water will gently flow through the small gap between the floor and the pool wall (so the water always remains in the pool). Within about five minutes your swimming hall, patio or living space is transformed into a full-size swimming pool.

 • What if you want to raise the floor? How does that work?

When you want to raise the floor to a higher position, the cylinder pressure is released in a controlled way and the floor will rise automatically as a result of the upward pressure caused by the integrated buoyancy.

 • How much weight can a movable floor hold when up?

The bearing capacity of a movable floor starts at a minimum of 100kg per m2 (220lbs per 10.76 ft2). This makes the safe floor deck in a closed position extremely suitable to serve as a patio, party venue or extension of the indoor/outdoor living space.

 • How do you clean under the movable floor?

A hatch is made in the construction of the movable floor, the tile located above the hatch can be removed. This allows Tieleman’s service technicians (who are A-1 certified divers) to dive under the movable floor. This way they can easily vacuum the bottom of the pool and inspect and maintain the movable floor system properly.

If your question is not answered here you should definitely check Tieleman’s FAQ page to learn more about the fundamentals of a movable floor.

Definitely not a mainstream product for the average pool owner

A movable floor, as it might suggest, is a product that belongs in the category of ultimate luxury. While the videos are becoming increasingly popular on social media, and homeowners might be wondering if they can have one of their own; this is still a pool feature reserved for the elite. This is not surprising when you consider the level of engineering and high quality materials it takes to manufacture and install this kind of product.

The history of the movable floor

You might not be expecting it, but the product has actually been on the market for quite a long time. For example, Tieleman Pool Technology has been developing customized pool solutions since 1970. To this day, the movable floor has been especially common for hydrotherapy purposes in medical institutions such as rehabilitation clinics, healthcare facilities and hospitals. In order to achieve optimal results with hydrotherapy, variation in depth is the key factor for success. To meet this specific need of the medical sector, the movable floor was developed back in the days.

Over the years, the product has evolved into a state-of-the-art pool solution that is not only suitable for medical institutions, but has also made its way into the public and residential market. Technology has been highly improved and there are countless add-on options for movable floors nowadays. These include integrated stairs (corner stairs, full width stairs and more), integrated sun decks/lounge areas and swim-out benches.

What does a proper movable floor consist of?

There are, of course, plenty of DIY videos of movable floors and other pool solutions. But what should a proper movable floor consist of if it wants to guarantee quality, a long lifespan and low maintenance?

First of all the construction beneath the floor deck must be resistant to corrosion and chlorides. That is why the unique Tieleman movable floor system, in contrast to others, consists of a Marine grade 316L stainless steel construction. For applications with highly corrosive environments, such as swimming pools, Marine grade 316L stainless steel is far superior and will have an extended lifespan compared with 304 grade. This is because Marine grade 316L stainless steel contains high levels of nickel, chromium and molybdenum. The molybdenum is added to protect the stainless steel from the elements such as chlorine and increases corrosion resistance, making this type of steel extremely suitable for use in swimming pools.

Secondly, no oil contamination of the pool can take place. Therefore the unique Tieleman system is powered by a water hydraulic cylinder. This technology eliminates the risk of (oil) contamination to the pool. And last but not least, Tieleman offers excellent service. At Tieleman, we can proudly state that we have been the preferred service provider for decades for our client base. With over 50 years of expertise in all areas of pool technology, Tieleman is your best choice to service your movable floor, says Koen, Marketing & Communications manager at Tieleman.

All the above makes a Tieleman movable floor an extremely durable system with a lifespan of up to 25-30 years.

A great opportunity for high-end U.S. pool builders and contractors to become a certified dealer

The most interesting part for pool builders is that a movable floor not only ensures ultimate safety, it also provides the versatility to create unique pool environments that are multi-use spaces. For example, you can use the floor deck (in a closed position) as a basketball court or even a party venue. This is perhaps the most appealing aspect for pool builders.

Since companies that manufacture, install and maintain movable floors generally do not build the pool itself, this offers excellent business opportunities for pool builders and others. For example the construction of the pool, the water treatment and the tiling of the movable floor needs to be done by a (local) contractor or pool builder. This is most definitely the right time for high-end pool builders, architects and contractors to make their move by partnering with a movable floor builder like Tieleman

DIY Above-Ground Pools Come With Hidden Costs https://www.poolmagazine.com/features/pools/diy-above-ground-pools-come-with-hidden-costs/ https://www.poolmagazine.com/features/pools/diy-above-ground-pools-come-with-hidden-costs/#respond Tue, 14 Mar 2023 03:52:38 https://www.poolmagazine.com/?p=25503

Thinking of buying a DIY above ground pool and performing your own pool installation? There are a few things you should know first.

The post DIY Above-Ground Pools Come With Hidden Costs appeared first on PoolMagazine.com - Get The Latest Pool News.

]]>

DIY above-ground pools are an affordable way to beat the heat during the hot summer months. An above-ground pool kit can seem like a great idea for those who want to save money and take on a fun DIY project. However, there are hidden drawbacks to purchasing an above ground pool that many people overlook. From installation to maintenance, novice pool owners may find themselves in over their heads with the cost and upkeep of their pool.

Quite often, the truth is that the all-in price of an above-ground pool is quite more expensive than most consumers realize, at least if you’re going to go with a standard above-ground pool kit and try to finish it with a deck and upgraded equipment. Tack on installation and the costs can really add up quickly.

How Much It Costs To Install an Above-Ground Pool

 1. Pool Kit: $1,460 – $6,150

The cost of an average above-ground pool kit depends on its size, shape, and material. The cost also varies based on whether you purchase a basic or a more upscale model.

 1. Upgraded Pool Equipment: $1,820 – $4,350

While the basic equipment that comes with the pool kit may be sufficient, you may want to consider upgrading to a better-quality pump and filter. Upgraded equipment can provide better circulation and filtration, which can help keep the water clean and clear.

 1. Deck: $3,120 – $8,500

Adding a pool deck can provide a more attractive and functional space for lounging and entertaining. The cost of the deck depends on its size, materials, and design.

 1. Installation: $3,200 – $6,500

Installing an above-ground pool requires leveling the ground, assembling the pool kit, and connecting the pool equipment. The cost of installation depends on the complexity of the project and the contractor’s fees. Ultimately, the total cost of the average above-ground pool project, including the pool kit, upgraded pool equipment, deck, and installation, would be between $9,600 and $25,500. Keep in mind that these are just rough estimates, and actual costs may vary depending on your location and a myriad of other factors.

Permits May Be Necessary

Installation is the first hurdle to overcome with a DIY above-ground pool. While the pool may come with instructions, there are still many things that could go wrong during your installation. For example, the ground may not be level, or the pool liner may be tricky to install, leading to needing a professional installation or costly repairs if you accidentally tear it while trying to install it yourself. In addition, some homeowners may not realize they need to obtain permits before installing a pool, which can lead to legal problems down the line, that’s exactly what happened to one homeowner in New York.

“I didn’t realize I needed a permit to install an above-ground pool in my backyard, and when the city found out, I was forced to take it down. It was a costly mistake that I wish I had avoided,” said Kevin Younger of Long Island.

After purchasing a DIY above-ground pool kit online and all the necessary materials, Kevin found that the final cost of installation was much higher than he anticipated. In fact, his above-ground pool installation cost him close to $12,500 all-in.

“I never thought installing an above-ground pool in my backyard could lead to such trouble. One day, a county inspector showed up with a fine and an order to take down the pool,” said Younger, “it turns out a neighbor must have reported me, and I had no idea that I needed a permit to install it. It was a really expensive lesson to learn.”

Consumers on average spend between $1,460 and $6,150 for an above-ground pool kit.

Inadequate Pool Equipment

The biggest problem with DIY pools comes after installation. Once the pool has water in it, the real work begins: maintenance. Many novice pool owners are ill-equipped to balance and clean their pool. Keeping the water clean and safe requires a lot of effort and expense. Chemicals, skimmers, vacuums, and filters are all necessary to maintain a healthy pool. If the pool is not properly maintained, it can quickly become a breeding ground for bacteria, algae, and other harmful organisms.

“I thought I could save money by maintaining my above-ground pool myself, but I soon learned that I’m no pool expert. I spent the better part of the summer trying just to keep it from turning green,” said Dallas, TX pool owner, Beth Pompano.

Many consumers report the equipment that comes with their above-ground pool isn't up to the task of keeping their pool clean.
Many consumers report the equipment that comes with their above-ground pool isn’t up to the task of keeping their pool clean.

“The filtration equipment that came with my above-ground pool kit was very basic and we decided to upgrade it after the first week,” said Pompano, “it came with a small pump and a filter that didn’t do a very good job. We wound up upgrading to a Pentair pump and sand filter. That was an added cost but we noticed an immediate improvement right away.”

Underperforming pool equipment can result in poor water quality and the need for constant cleaning. In Beth’s case, upgrading the filtration equipment was costly, and she paid several thousand dollars. “The plumbing and electrical needed to be redone to accommodate the upgraded equipment, that was definitely an unexpected kick in the pants. Then we added a pool deck which was yet another cost.” said Pompano.

Unexpected Maintenance Fees

Vinyl liners in above-ground pools generally last 6-10 years before needing replacement, although this can vary based on factors such as the quality of the liner, the level of maintenance, and the amount of use. Signs that a liner needs to be replaced include fading, cracks, tears, or wrinkles that cannot be smoothed out.

The cost of replacing a vinyl liner in an above-ground pool varies depending on factors such as the size of the pool, the quality of the liner, and the cost of labor in the area. On average, the cost of a new liner and installation can range from $1,500 to $3,000 or more. However, a DIY installation can lower the cost if you have the necessary skills and equipment.

Finally, there are hidden costs associated with pool maintenance. Many homeowners assume that the cost of chemicals and equipment is all they will need to pay. However, weekly service is recommended to ensure the pool stays clean and balanced. This can still cost about $180 a month for basic chemical maintenance. These costs can quickly add up, making a DIY above-ground pool less of a bargain than it may seem.

Above-Ground Pools Are Still a Top Option For DIY’ers

Despite the hidden drawbacks of purchasing and installing an above-ground pool, homeowners continue to be eager to build their own backyard oasis. The DIY pool market typically sees a spike starting at the beginning of the pool season, and this summer is predicted to be no exception.

With the right knowledge, planning, and budget, homeowners can still successfully install and maintain their own above-ground pool. Still, it’s important to research local regulations and obtain the necessary permits before beginning installation. Make sure you’re installing on level ground and have equipment up to the task of adequately filtering your pool. Homeowners should also be prepared for the added costs of materials, equipment, and ongoing maintenance.

Renovating a pool can be an exciting project. A well-executed pool renovation can breathe new life into your backyard, create a more enjoyable swimming experience, and add value to your property. However, if not planned and executed properly, a pool remodel can quickly become a complete disaster. From skyrocketing costs to shoddy workmanship, there are a number of things that can go wrong.

Thoroughly planning your pool renovation project before you begin is crucial to its success. Without proper planning, the project can quickly become overwhelming and lead to unexpected issues, delays, and budget overruns. A well-planned renovation project, on the other hand, ensures that all aspects of the project are considered, allowing you to make informed decisions and avoid costly mistakes. In this article, we’ll discuss some tips on how to prevent your pool renovation from becoming a complete disaster.

10 Pool Renovation Tips To Know Before You Start a Remodeling Project

 1. Plan, Plan, Plan

The first step to a successful pool renovation is to plan everything out in advance. Start by making a list of everything you want to accomplish with your renovation. Do you want to add new features like waterfalls or hot tubs? Do you want to replace old pool equipment or resurface the pool? Write down all of your goals and prioritize them.

Once you have a list of goals, it’s time to start planning the details. This includes creating a budget, hiring a pool contractor, and determining a timeline. Be sure to get multiple quotes from different contractors, and make sure that they are all licensed and insured. Don’t rush the planning process – taking the time to do it right will save you headaches and money in the long run.

 1. Consider the Overall Design

When renovating your pool, it’s important to consider the overall design of your backyard. Your pool should complement the existing landscaping and outdoor living space. This will help create a cohesive look and add value to your home.

If you’re not sure what design will work best for your backyard, consider consulting with a landscape architect or pool designer. They can help you create a custom design that meets your needs and complements your home’s style.

 1. Address Any Underlying Issues

Before starting any renovation work, it’s important to address any underlying issues with your pool. This includes fixing any leaks, repairing cracks in the pool’s structure, and addressing any plumbing or electrical issues.

If you don’t address these issues before starting your renovation, they can quickly turn into bigger problems, leading to additional costs and delays in your renovation timeline.

 1. Set a Realistic Budget

Before starting any pool renovation project, it’s important to set a realistic budget. That’s one of the most important do’s and don’ts of pool remodeling. This will help you avoid overspending and ensure you’re able to complete the project without running out of money. When setting your budget, be sure to factor in the cost of materials, labor, and any unexpected expenses that may arise.

It’s also important to prioritize your renovation needs. If your budget is limited, focus on fixing any safety issues or structural damage first. Cosmetic upgrades can be done later when you have more funds available.

 1. Get the Necessary Permits

Before starting any pool renovation work, you need to make sure you have all the necessary permits. Building codes vary by state and county, so it’s important to check with your local government to find out what permits you need.

If you fail to obtain the necessary permits, you may be subject to fines and could be forced to stop work on your renovation until you have obtained them. Additionally, not having the proper permits can affect your homeowner’s insurance coverage, leaving you liable in case of accidents or damages.

 1. Don’t Cut Corners

One of the biggest mistakes that homeowners make during a pool renovation is trying to cut corners to save money. While it’s important to stay within your budget, trying to save money by using inferior materials or hiring unlicensed contractors can be a recipe for disaster. In the end, you may end up spending more money to fix the mistakes made by these shortcuts.

If you want your pool renovation to be a success, be willing to invest in quality materials and hire experienced professionals. This may mean spending more money up front, but it will save you money and headaches down the line.

 1. Research Materials and Equipment

When planning your pool renovation, it’s important to research the materials and equipment that you plan to use. Don’t just rely on the recommendations of your contractor – do your own research and make informed decisions. This includes researching the pros and cons of different types of pool finishes, pool heaters, pumps, and filters.

Following the latest trends is smart, but don’t be swayed by gimmicks. Stick to tried and true materials and equipment that are known to work well. This will help ensure that your pool renovation is a success and that you don’t end up with equipment that needs constant repairs or replacement.

 1. Communicate Clearly With Your Contractor

Communication is key when it comes to a successful pool renovation. Make sure that you communicate clearly with your contractor from the start. Discuss your goals and expectations, and make sure that they understand what you want to accomplish with your renovation.

Throughout the renovation process, continue to communicate with your contractor. Ask questions and provide feedback, and make sure that they are keeping you informed of progress and any issues that arise. If you notice something that doesn’t look right, speak up and address it immediately.

 1. Prepare for the Unexpected

No matter how well you plan, there will always be unexpected issues that arise during a pool renovation. This could be anything from weather or equipment delays to unforeseen plumbing issues. Be prepared for these unexpected issues by building in extra time and money into your budget.

Additionally, be willing to be flexible with your renovation plans. If something unexpected comes up that requires a change in plans, be willing to adjust your plans accordingly. This will help ensure that your pool renovation stays on track and doesn’t become a complete disaster.

 1. Don’t Rush the Process

The key to a successful pool renovation is taking your time and doing things right. Rushing the renovation process can lead to mistakes, oversights, and even accidents that can compromise the quality of the work and result in additional costs and delays.

Before starting your renovation, take the time to plan out all the details, including the scope of the work, your budget, and your timeline. Rushing into a renovation without a clear plan can lead to unexpected issues that can quickly spiral out of control.

Common Pool Renovation Projects & How Much They Cost

Marcus Weekes from Premier Pools & Gardens in Brisbane explains that pool renovation projects are a common undertaking for homeowners. He mentions several common projects that homeowners usually choose, including installing new tile and coping, waterline tile, custom interiors, pool lighting, filtration improvement, and equipment relocation.

Renovating Tile & Coping

Renovating tile and coping involves replacing old, worn-out tiles and coping with new ones to give the pool a fresh look. Another popular option is replacing the waterline tile that runs around the perimeter inside of the pool. Homeowners typically will choose between glass and ceramic mosaic tiles to enhance the pool’s appearance.

Custom Interiors

Many pool owners will opt for custom surface interiors. In Australia where Weekes is located, they use Pebblecrete. Here in the U.S. you’re more likely to use Pebbletec. Whichever you opt for, that type of glass beading is used to give the pool a unique and sparkling look.

Adding or Upgrading Lighting

Weekes suggests that adding pool lighting or upgrading to LED lighting can also provide a more vibrant and welcoming atmosphere, especially during nighttime swimming.

Upgrading or Relocating Equipment

He also notes that a pool renovation is an opportune time to improve your pool’s filtration. This can involve replacing old filters or adding new pool equipment to improve the pool’s water quality. Equipment relocation may be necessary if the pool equipment is causing noise or visual distractions.

Pool Renovation Costs

Overall, homeowners can choose from a variety of different renovation projects to upgrade their pool’s appearance and functionality. From small changes like adding lighting to larger projects like custom interiors, these renovations can make a significant difference in the overall enjoyment of the pool. How much your pool remodeling project will cost ultimately boils down to the materials and contractor you choose.

Work With an Expert

Perhaps the most critical takeaway in this entire article to preventing your pool renovation from becoming a disaster is to work with a reputable and experienced contractor. Finding the right contractor can be a daunting task, but it’s crucial to take the time to research and interview potential candidates. Look for contractors who have a track record of success in pool renovation and who are licensed, insured, and bonded. Additionally, it’s essential to check references, read online reviews, and ask for a detailed proposal that outlines the scope of work, materials, and costs. By working with a trustworthy contractor, you can ensure that your pool renovation is completed on time, within budget, and to your satisfaction.

Good Communication is Key

The final important takeaway to achieving a successful pool renovation is to plan thoroughly and communicate clearly. This includes identifying your goals and priorities, setting a realistic budget, and creating a detailed timeline for the project. It’s also important to be flexible and open to changes as the project progresses, as unexpected issues can arise that require adjustments to the plan. By working closely with your contractor and communicating regularly, you can stay informed about the progress of the renovation and address any concerns or issues promptly. In the end, a well-planned and executed pool renovation can enhance your home’s value and your family’s enjoyment of your outdoor space for years to come.

A Florida couple’s unique swimming pool has been causing a stir all over the internet. The Minardi’s, Louis and Raye Ellen, built a swimming pool in their backyard that was designed to look like a six-shooter revolver. This eye-catching and unconventional pool has gone viral on social media, with people either loving or hating the design.

Florida Homeowners Gun Shaped Pool Turning Heads on Social Media

Louis Minardi, who grew up hunting with friends, remembers receiving his first firearm, a double-barrel shotgun, when he was only in middle school. He went on to open a gunsmith business with his brother after attending classes in 1976. In the 1980s, when he and his wife decided they wanted a lap pool, they called up their friend Albert Jones III, who owned A.H. Jones Pool Company. It was during this conversation that the idea for a gun-shaped pool was born.

Homeowner Wanted A Six-Shooter Shaped Pool For Swimming Laps

Jones, who was bored of building more traditionally shaped pools, showed up with plans modeled after a Ruger Blackhawk, a 1950s-era, Western-style revolver characterized by its long barrel and known for its durability and accuracy. The final result was a 55-foot long pool shaped like a six-shooter revolver, complete with a concrete replica of a bullet.

“You swim your lap down the barrel,” Minardi said Jones told him. “It gets deeper on that end. You can flip over from it, and then you can swim back.”

Jones begged him, Louis Minardi said, to let him construct the gun pool. He complained that he was sick of making the standard kidney-shaped pools found in so many Florida backyards. Minardi consented, on the condition that he adhere to the financial constraints of his project.

Minardi, who lives in the Tampa area, has owned the revolver-shaped pool for roughly 40 years. “Neighbors that have bought houses around here have all come by,”they’re all, ‘Is this guy a whack job?’,” said Minardi.

Jones, who died in 2010, color-coordinated the perimeter pool tiles to accurately reflect the revolver’s brown handle and silver body. He detailed tiles on the bottom of the pool to distinguish the gun’s individual components, like the trigger and ammunition chamber. And he installed a jacuzzi in the hammer.

Revolver Pool Continues To Stir Controversy 40 Years Later

When Minardi built the pool four decades ago, he created the ultimate conversation starter in his backyard. While the pool has been resurfaced over the years, the shape remains the same. Louis Minardi said the pool is popular among family and friends, who have used it to teach their children to swim.

The revolver-shaped pool, is stirring controversy all over the web due to the ongoing debates surrounding gun culture, gun ownership, and gun violence in the United States. The pool’s unique design, combined with the state’s reputation for guns, has garnered attention and sparked discussion among those who view the pool as a reflection of the state’s gun culture. Some may see the pool as a celebration of gun ownership, while others may view it as insensitive or inappropriate, given the prevalence of gun violence in the country. Additionally, the current political climate in the United States has seen an increase in calls for gun control and regulation, making the pool’s design a polarizing topic of conversation.

The Minardi’s, however, defend their decision, stating that the pool is simply an expression of their love for firearms and gun culture. They believe that the pool is a harmless and fun addition to their backyard, and they have no intention of changing it anytime soon.

In 2023 swimming pools will be seen in new shapes, sizes and feature high-tech automation to fit any indoor or outdoor space. One high tech pool feature that is becoming increasingly popular is the movable pool floor.

When most people think of a swimming pool, typically they imagine space devoted exclusively to the pool. The thought that this same space could be used multifunctionally wouldn’t occur to them. Imagine having a party in the backyard with your friends or your family, BBQ fired up and all that is missing is a swimming pool. What if you could magically change your patio into a full-size swimming pool? With the push of a button the water gently starts flowing across the movable floor. The technology behind a movable pool floor

For more than 50 years, Tieleman Pool Technology is the mastermind behind these floating movable pool floors. The unique Tieleman movable floor system consists of a stainless steel 316L floating platform which features a series of cables and a pulley system with a water-based hydraulic cylinder.

The strong base of the movable floor provides a bearing capacity of over 100kg per m² (220lbs per ft²). Integrated in the structure are solid buoyancy devices that allow the pool floor to float to the surface. This implies that all technology is concealed within the frame of the movable floor and thus no cables along the pool wall, which ensures a high level of safety and clean finish.

The floor can be adjusted to every desired depth. When the floor is moved, the water will gently flow through the small gap between the floor and the pool wall. Within about four to five minutes your patio or living space is transformed into a full-size swimming pool. If you would like to see various movable floors you should definitely request the free brochure here .

Benefits for pool owners

A movable pool floor is not just high-end engineering and design. Besides the fact that a movable floor allows you to use your pool multifunctionally, it has numerous benefits in store for pool owners.

 • Ultimate safety

A movable floor enables you to adjust the water depth of you swimming pool according to your personal preferences. This increases safety for users, especially children. In a raised position the pool is inaccessible for incorrect or unsupervised use.

 • Saves energy

The historic drought , particularly in the western and southwestern United States, has led to an increasing demand for sustainable solutions that significantly reduce pool water evaporation. In a raised position, the movable pool floor prevents water evaporation, heat loss and ensures lower heating costs through insulation integrated in the floor.

 • User-friendly

The movable floor system is very convenient and therefore user-friendly. The operation is controlled via a simple push button, a touch panel or a mobile device, which can be equipped with passwords for different users.

Eye-catching details and architectural integrity

It is no longer a secret that flexibility and functionality of space, architectural integrity and, last but not least endless customization, can no longer be dismissed from luxury residences and swimming pools in the year 2023. As Steve Jobs (co-founder of Apple, Inc) once said: “Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.

As a swimming pool and its movable floor form an essential part of the architectural stronghold, Tieleman exclusively engineers each movable floor to incorporate the ideas and options desired by the client.

And that is why Tieleman is definitely setting the bar with their movable floors and associated options. The shape is only limited by the available free space and additional features (integrated stairs, integrated sun deck/lounge area, swim-out benches e.a.) are engineered and designed to match the pool and its surroundings. So whatever idea you have, with a Tieleman movable floor the possibilities are endless.

A great opportunity for pool builders to expand their business

It can be challenging for pool builders to compete due to the constant trends in the industry. Therefore, pool builders and designers must find ways to stay innovative. In turn, movable floors give pool builders access to a new niche market, allowing them to increase sales, revenue and profits. In fact, industry experts predict that movable floors will not only take the pool industry by storm but even grow to become a household name within the industry. So definitely something to keep an eye on.
