In the realm of opulence and architectural innovation, a unique project has emerged, blending the world of high-end automobiles with the tranquility of a residential swimming pool. Nestled in the waterfront properties of South Florida, a cutting-edge pool, dubbed the “Lambo Pool,” has been crafted to showcase a homeowner’s Lamborghini in a mesmerizing aquatic display. This extraordinary venture was a collaboration between Foxterra Design, Custom Pool Systems, and Jonny Nalepa, a distinguished pool professional and aquatics engineer from Smart Aquatics.

A consultant on projects throughout the Sunshine state, Nalepa’s burgeoning firm Smart Aquatics recently had the opportunity to collaborate on numerous high profile projects, the latest was completed several months ago and has already begun turning heads.

Swimming Pool Built to Showcase a $250K Lamborghini

“The Lambo Pool” project, as Jonny Nalepa affectionately calls it, was brought to life through the vision of entrepreneur Alex Moeller, a passionate car enthusiast and homeowner in Davie, Florida. Moeller’s desire was to seamlessly integrate his prized Lamborghini Aventador SVJ into his backyard, an idea that prompted him to engage the expertise of Foxterra Design.

Foxterra Design, led by the innovative duo Justin and Nate, known for their wild and incredible designs, took on the challenge of creating a pool that would not only house the luxurious vehicle but also serve as a breathtaking water feature. The project was further brought to fruition by Custom Pool Systems, the builders responsible for transforming the conceptual design into a tangible reality.

Jonny Nalepa, in his role as a consultant, played a crucial part in transposing Foxterra Design’s conceptual renderings into a working set of construction drawings that Custom Pool Systems used to physically build the pool. With the Lamborghini being a high-value asset, Nalepa and his team took meticulous steps to prevent any potential damage. This involved extensive research, including reaching out to Lamborghini to obtain precise measurements and specifications for the vehicle.

Technical Challenges Bringing The Project To Fruition

“With a vehicle that’s probably over $250,000, we wanted to make sure that we didn’t damage the car by making the water too deep or when the car is driving over the perimeter overflow there,” said Nalepa, “I mean, there’s a slot with a gutter underneath, so we have a cantilevered condition. We got to make sure this thing’s going to work right.”

“This one happened to be on a grass edge, but we also had to make sure that we could support the vehicle going over this perimeter overflow as many times as the client wanted to move it, ” explained Nalepa.

“We took Foxterra’s design and we developed it to make sure that we met all the setbacks and the codes and everything for Miami. We did our due diligence and were pretty thorough. We looked up the actual model, make and model of the vehicle. We measured the height of it. We measured the width of the wheels, because there are some bubblers in that area where the car is parked. So we don’t want the car to drive over the bubblers, or at the very least, if the car does drive over them, we don’t want them to crack because most pool fixtures are plastic,” said Nalepa.

Going The Extra Mile To Research

In his detailed explanation, Nalepa mentioned, “We contacted Lamborghini, and we got all the specifications. We confirmed what the max slope was. The car can go up and down and left and right. And we wanted to make sure that we had enough water to overflow this feature so that you could visually see that it’s a water feature.”

“We had to modify what our typical perimeter overflow detail is,” explained Nalepa, “there’s a gutter beneath, in this case, a stainless steel overhang. It’s like an L bracket almost that overhangs a gutter and comes almost right up against the pool structure. So all you see is a little strip, but in the area where the car goes over, we didn’t want to have a full overhang of six or eight inches.”

“The car is pretty heavy, and you never know what’s going to happen,” said Nalepa, “someone could park it and stop. The back wheels could be sitting on that overhang, so we had to account for that and beef up the structure on that side.”

Thinking Around Corners

The way this was done is pretty ingenious, according to Nalepa. “We removed the drop piping from that entry area and wanted to make sure that the structure was robust enough so we got rid of all the PVC plumbing that goes in a typical perimeter overflow edge condition. Doing it that way we could increase the structural integrity of the concrete. We kind of made it a minimal gutter where the overhang is only a few inches.”

“We went through a couple of different iterations, by the way, before we landed on that one. In the end, it’s kind of a simple solution to achieve the look Foxterra was going for,” said Nalepa.

Despite the difficult technical challenges, the Lambo Pool was a resounding success. Nalepa expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “We were excited to work on this project, but it was definitely a challenging one.”

“Lambo Pool” Collaboration Rolled Out a Winner

One of the standout moments for Nalepa was the opportunity to drive the Lamborghini onto the feature, a surreal experience for any car enthusiast. Reflecting on the uniqueness of the project, he remarked, “It’s so far out of something that you can dream up, the fact that Foxterra was like, ‘Let’s put it in the pool.’ Most people may have just parked it next to the pool or something like that, but they went for it.”

Custom Pool Systems also knocked it out of the park on this project. “The perimeter overflow is impressive. There are no dry spots. They did an incredible job executing and building this project. There’s a level of craftsmanship that you can see a mile away. It looks and feels expensive and that’s through material selections and just the way the mitered edges are and devils in the details kinds of things,” said Nalepa.

The Lambo Pool stands as a testament to the collaborative efforts of talented professionals in the fields of design, construction, and aquatics engineering. It exemplifies the intersection of luxury, creativity, and meticulous planning, resulting in a truly extraordinary fusion of automotive and aquatic excellence.

The great debate of the pool industry has always been about pools built with serviceability in mind. Pool service pros are constantly saying that builders do not consider what a pool needs to be serviceable. They claim the builder only cares about the aesthetics of the design and cost. Are they right? In some cases the service pros are. However, there are quality builders who wish to produce an ideal product but run into obstacles, such as customer preferences, that make it difficult to do that. When I asked pool services pros on Facebook what they would like pool builders to consider for the pros coming to the job afterward, I received dozens of comments. Responses ranged from salesmen with claims that purchasing chemical automation and sanitization would eliminate the need for the service pros to the actual installation of equipment and plumbing.

The Great Pool Debate: Top 5 Complaints Service Pros Found In The Field

Poor communication is a constant issue that comes up in the great pool debate.
Poor communication is a constant issue that comes up in the great pool debate.

Communication with the pool owner about maintenance

In any project the biggest asset is communication. This is, also, important in the pool-building process. During the builder and homeowner relationship, it is important to educate homeowners on the maintenance requirements for their choices.

Recently, I was on a job site where the homeowner chose to use black tile on their infinity edge wall. Luckily, their builder had mentioned that using that particular tile can require regular cleaning from scale build-up. As time has passed, the homeowner has been comfortable with their choice and the maintenance needs associated with their material selections. This is not always a situation.

According to Peter Wiedermann in Perth, Australia, it is quite common for builders to tell their clients swimming pools only need to be serviced once a month since they have filtration and chemical automation. As the great pool debate rages on, maintenance professionals know, no matter what you have installed it needs to be monitored closely to make sure that components are functioning correctly. If there is a lack of education among homeowners, it creates mistrust between pool service professionals and consumers.

“Please stop plastering lights on the wall!!! Is this too much to ask??” commented Kathleen Maloney with Armadillo Pools in Sacramento, CA

When the pool service professional goes to replace pool lights, it is extremely common, especially when inch-and-a-half lights are used, for them to be plastered in. This is a problem because in order to remove the light and replace it with a new one, service techs will need to remove the plaster around the light. This causes higher replacement costs and additional concerns with the homeowner about how much damage might be done by removing the light.

Luckily, there are ways to avoid this from happening. You can wait to install lights until after the pool surface is completed. This may add additional labor costs for the builder because of the extra visit but is preferred with future maintenance in mind. If the extra visit is a concern, many light manufacturers include plaster caps you can place on lights prior to plastering. This can also help avoid plaster build-up on the fixture. In addition, there are nicheless wall fittings you can place on the conduit or pipe used for the lights. This provides a ring that the plaster installer can build the surface around in order to avoid contact with the lights.

“More than one skimmer, one shallow one deep, do it!” said Gregory Wilker

There should be one skimmer for every 800 sq ft of surface area on residential pools and every 500 sq ft of surface area on commercial pools. Ideally, placing them at either end or equally spread out their purpose helps to remove oil and debris from the pool. Pool designers and builders need to take into consideration the variety of elements in the area around the pool when adding skimmers.

As many pool service professionals have experienced, when there is a high foliage area, one skimmer cannot contain high amounts of debris in a short period of time. This becomes problematic and leads to more frequent visits. In turn, we ask customers to check skimmer baskets frequently between visits or risk the pump running without adequate water flow. Yes, adding additional skimmers adds additional costs but this is where communication between builders and service technicians can help homeowners understand those additional costs.

The Great Pool Debate

Understand the pool sweep line needs to be accessible

How many times have you walked into a yard with a beautiful natural pool design to find the pool sweep line access is blocked by a rock or unreachable from the deck due to a tanning ledge? Per manufacturers’ recommendations, pool sweep lines need to be six inches below the water level in the center of the pool for optimal cleaning. For builders, this can be a challenge when implementing this due to design or homeowner-specific requests. Ideally, pool service professionals want the builders to avoid placing rocks and/or landscaping being placed right above the pool sweep line. They would like to be able to access these lines from the deck without the need to physically get into the pool. The reason for promoting accessibility here is to ease future repairs and servicing of the pool sweep.

“Realize Everything they install will eventually need to be serviced or repaired.” Loren Jarvis at Pool Patrol in Cardiff, United Kingdom

Out of all the problems pool professionals have with pool builds, the amount of space for an equipment pad and the amount of space between pieces of equipment is without a doubt the the numer one complaint.

I know from my experience, that when I walk into a yard for a warranty call there are many times I think to myself as I turn the corner, “What the hell were they thinking.” When a builder is planning the equipment pad, they have a few obstacles. They have to look at the property lines, setbacks, and easements. They, also, have to consider clearance for heaters, walkways, and customer preferences. This can make it challenging to create the proper amount of real estate for the equipment pad.

From the service pro standpoint, yes, we would love spacious equipment sets, but we do understand its limits. What the pool service pro wants is enough room to open a filter, remove the pump without having to cut plumbing, and to be able to service the salt cell with some ease to name a few. They, also, want to have enough space in suction and return manifolds for repairs without having to cut concrete or requiring reconstruction of the entire manifold for a minor plumbing repair.

Ultimately,  service professionals and builders have the same mission. Creating a pleasing environment for homeowners and their families to enjoy. This can be achieved with consideration on both sides.

Paramount's in-floor cleaning system remains a top choice for maintaining the aesthetic of the swimming pool canvas.

In the ever-evolving world of pool technology, Paramount Pool & Spa Systems has emerged as a frontrunner, boasting over 90% market share in the in-floor cleaning sector. Established in the late ’60s by the Ghiz Family and later acquired by Hayward, the company’s commitment to innovation and customer service has propelled it to the forefront of the industry. Today, Paramount’s in-floor cleaning system has become a cornerstone of pool maintenance in many custom inground pools and a game-changer in enhancing the overall swimming pool experience.

John Anderson, Regional Manager for Paramount, explained why forward-thinking pool builders are leaning toward in-floor systems as a way to maintain the integrity of the swimming pool in the overall scheme of the backyard canvas.

Changing Perceptions About In-Floor Cleaning Technology

“When I was building pools, electronics controls were very simple. These days, everything’s gotten extremely complicated,” explained Anderson, “We went from the Flintstones to the Jetsons in less than 20 years.”

“Many builders today still don’t truly understand in-floor systems. I’ll be honest with you, back when I was building pools, I didn’t either. I wasn’t into plumbing a whole bunch of pipe on the bottom of the floor and the additional cost associated with that,” said Anderson.

“What I found out later on was that a lot of high-end builders with unique circumstances didn’t want a robotic pool cleaner or hoses floating in their work of art. In the course of those 20 years, we went from swimming pools to water shapes. Now the entire industry is looking at how the backyard is more of a work of art than a cement pond,” explained Anderson.

Paramount's in-floor cleaning system

Science Behind The System

At the heart of Paramount’s in-floor cleaning system lies a specific water curtain design coupled with its patented PCC system which effectively cleans 99% of a swimming pool’s surface. Tailored to accommodate the unique dimensions of each pool, this system boasts a patented “Collection Zone” and automated debris removal functionality.

Operating on the principle of pressurized water, the PCC system efficiently suspends dirt, facilitating its removal by the pool’s filtration system. The system’s innovation lies in its patented water-actuated distributor valve, strategically directing the flow of water to various cleaning nozzles in a sequential manner. This ensures a thorough and systematic cleaning process, optimizing the overall performance of the pool cleaning and circulation system.

Ease of Installation

Ease of integration is a big factor of why more pool builders than ever are looking to in-floor as a viable solution explained Anderson. “What’s nice about our system is that it’s 100% hydraulically driven. Our systems integrate with any pump and any smart technology,” said Anderson.

“All installers really need to do is get water to the valve, and we’ll take care of the rest,” said Anderson, “that’s all part of our design. We do a CAD drawing that lays everything out specifically and tells the contractor where to plumb, where to put all our products laid out with the schematics that are required for the plumbers to do what they need to do and then the process for the finishers to do their work.”

Technology Innovations

Paramount’s flagship product has undoubtedly been the PCC system, however, the PVR system continues to gain traction in the market. “One of the systems I push the most for new builders is our PVR system. Out of the dealers I’ve signed the past twelve months, 99% of them opted to go with the PVR because it’s easier to install,” said Anderson. “It’s a ratcheted, self-cleaning nozzle that’ll clean anywhere from six to ten feet.”

“We’ve innovated on that because a lot of pools are nine feet deep or more,” explained Anderson, “the sweep radius up to the rear wall usually inhibits standard in-floor system cleaners, because they won’t rotate properly. On the PVR the head actually rotates.”

Paramount In-Floor Pool Cleaning System

“We have an MDX-R3 safety drain, which is VGB compliant and LA County approved,” explained Anderson, “we also use a BuzzTop, which is basically just a channel drain with a lid that allows debris to be captured. Our application also features a canister that’s in the deck, or can be stationed back by the equipment pad.”

Paramount In-Floor System

Multiple Applications

While Paramount’s in-floor cleaning technology has been a mainstay in custom concrete inground pools for years, they have also developed applications for vinyl liner and fiberglass swimming pools as well. “Our Vanish line is ideal for the vinyl market and actually is flush to the finish of the vinyl liner. Our Vantage products are used by a lot of dealers venturing into fiberglass pools,” said Anderson.

What Makes In-Floor So Appealing?

For those embarking on a swimming pool project, an in-floor cleaning system is an exhilarating prospect, offering near maintenance-free benefits. Paramount’s in-floor cleaning systems go beyond mere cleaning by actively circulating water and chemicals in pools from the bottom up. This dynamic circulation not only ensures a consistently clean and swim-ready pool but also serves as an eco-friendly solution. In-floor systems enhance both the aesthetic and functional aspects of a swimming pool, promising pristine water and cost-effective maintenance; making it a no-brainer for many pool owners.

A Top Choice For Professionals

In-floor cleaning technology has become a favored choice among today’s top pool designers seeking to preserve the pristine aesthetics of their meticulously crafted waterscapes. Paramount’s in-floor cleaning system, in particular, addresses the concerns of designers who aim to maintain a clean and clutter-free canvas without the intrusion of hoses or robotic cleaners within the pool.

High-end pool designers often work with unique circumstances, such as custom shapes, negative edge basins, spas, or lazy rivers. Paramount’s in-floor system’s adaptability to various pool types and styles makes it an ideal choice for designers dealing with unconventional and bespoke projects. This flexibility ensures that the swimming pool remains true to the designer’s vision.

Edwards Pool Construction, based in Wichita, Kansas, has steadily carved out a niche for itself as the premier pool builder in the area. Headed by the visionary Steve Edwards, a seasoned pool builder and hot rod aficionado, the firm has transformed from its roots in pool service to one of the most respected names in pool construction. This transformation reflects their commitment to not only creating stunning designs but also building pools with service in mind.

Approaching Pool Construction With Future Maintenance in Mind

Steve Edwards, the driving force behind Edwards Pool Construction, has a unique approach to his work. In an interview with Pool Magazine, he shared his journey, stating, “I never worked for anyone and just reverse-engineered everything, as I learned.”

Hot Rodding Pools For Performance

Edwards’ passion for hot rods coupled with his mechanical knowledge has significantly influenced his pool construction techniques. He revels in modifying pool equipment pads for higher performance, drawing parallels between his love for speed and his innovative pool designs.

Averi Edwards, Steve’s daughter, maintains pools for the company. She explained that the service aspect is always an important consideration in her father’s mind. “My dad started in the business servicing pools. He would hot rod equipment pads and make them easier to work on. That is what is always in the back of his mind when he’s building something.”

Hotrodding the pool equipment pad is the norm for Edwards.

On Building Pools With Maintenance in Mind

Edwards says that her father’s doctrine of building around ease of access for maintenance remains a mission-critical aspect on every pool project.

“He’s always thinking, how is this going to be serviced? How are we going to clean this and get a vacuum hose down here? He’s making sure that we have adequate filtration. That the pipe sizes are big enough, that we’ve got enough pumps, enough chlorinators, enough sanitation. These things are always in the back of his mind. So really, by the time that our service guys come in, it makes it really easy on us to take over,” Averi explained.

Edwards's methodology is building pools with service in mind.

Seeing Things a Little Different

One of the most intriguing aspects of Edwards’ philosophy to building pools with service in mind is his ability to envision three-dimensional structures in his head, a skill that has helped him hone his craft as a builder. “I make my living doing things I’ve never done before and it’s been like that since day one,” explained Edwards. “The art of putting water over an edge or up in the air; that type of plumbing, it all comes back to hot rod knowledge, mechanical knowledge, and my ability to see hydraulics and structure in my head.”

Bringing The Wow Factor to Wichita

When it comes to designing and constructing pools, Edwards begins with the homeowner and the traditional expectations of Wichita’s conservative market. “Rectangular pools with auto covers are popular out here because we’ve got a lot of wind up here. So how do you dress that up? You curve it up on the inside, curve it up on the deck,” explained Edwards, “most of my design work is on the ground with a can of paint. Once people can see what I’m able to do there are x amount that will just let you go. Those are my favorite projects. I’ve had several clients just turn me loose. Not loose financially, but a little bit architecturally.”

Going outside the box seems to be working for Edwards. One of his most recent projects features killer geometry with an almost ampersand-shaped swimming pool and lazy river. The project presented numerous technical challenges and we were eager to learn more about what went into building the vessel.

Edwards pool construction is bringing something truly unique to the Wichita market.
Edwards Pool Construction is bringing something truly unique to the Wichita market.

“This project was brought to me by a builder I’d never heard of,” said Edwards, “he just walked into my shop and threw down a set of plans. That project ended up probably at 10 million, I would think. We shot that pool and it was challenging.”

When an opportunity to hot rod the lazy river aspect of the pool presented itself, Edwards jumped on it. “I made some changes to the lazy river and how it was designed. It’s got two Riverflow, 3000 gallon-a-minute pumps in it. I’ve used Riverflow twice before. Never in a lazy river, but it all works amazing,” said Edwards.

Edwards’s unique ability to find ways to improve the aesthetic of the overall project would foster a unique collaboration with one of the industry’s leading tile artisans.

“They wanted to do tile and we introduced the idea of glass. So we contacted Jimmy Reed. We ended up tenting the pool. It was nice and air-conditioned through the rain and heat and the guys were able to work continuously for six or seven weeks. Then we had to cover the tile up and set for another winter before we ever plastered that pool,” explained Edwards.

Building Pools With Service in Mind - Edwards Pool Construction

The end result of this sophisticated and avant-garde design represents a significant departure from the prototypical geometric-shaped swimming pools typically found throughout the Wichita market. In fact, the design is so unique that one might wonder if this pool in particular might usher a renaissance towards more unconventional designs.

“Batman Lives There”

“It’s an incredible pool,” Edwards remarked cheerfully, “you could plop that pool down in California just about anywhere but it’s really crazy for Wichita. I tell people Batman lives there because the Batmobile sitting in front of that house would look right at home.”

The success of this build has already led to more work of this nature for the Wichita pool builder. “I’m lucky to have been a part of this project I thought I’d never build anything like that. I just walked it the other day, and it’s just crazy when you realize you built something like that,” said Edwards. “Now we’ve got two other projects of that scale going at the same time in the same neighborhood. I never would have thought I could build two at the same time, but we’re doing it.”

For more than 62 years, Master Pools Guild (MPG) has been a beacon of excellence in the pool industry, providing a unique platform for collaboration, education, and support among its members. Founded in 1962 by a group of visionary pool builders in California, MPG has evolved into an exclusive international network of custom pool builders, with a commitment to maintaining the highest standards of construction and ethical practices.

At the helm of MPG stands its current Executive Director, Teri Wiltshire, who brings over 15 years of experience in the pool and spa industry to her role. In a recent interview, Wiltshire shed light on the organization’s history, mission, and the transition into her position as Executive Director.

Master Pools Guild Receives Special Recognition Award From PHTA

Wiltshire emphasized the familial nature of MPG, stating, “Our group is tight-knit, 100 members. They have always been incredibly supportive. We’re a tight-knit family.” This cohesion is crucial as it fosters a spirit of openness and communication, a unique characteristic in an industry where competitors often find themselves at odds.

Continuing a Proud Tradition of Excellence

Since its inception, MPG’s mission has remained focused on communication, networking, and continuing education. Wiltshire notes that one remarkable aspect of the organization is the emergence of third and fourth-generation members, who, having grown up within the organization, contribute to smooth transitions in ownership and management within their respective companies.

Contrary to misconception, MPG is not a buying group. While they do provide a small annual rebate to members based on their purchasing, the organization’s primary focus is on sharing knowledge and education. Wiltshire clarified, “Overwhelmingly our purpose is sharing and education. We provide our members with the continuing education they need to stay at the top of their game.”

Master Pools Guild Meeting

Becoming a Member of Master Pools Guild

Membership in MPG is by invitation only, and the organization maintains a rigorous vetting process to ensure the highest standards in construction and ethical practices. Wiltshire outlined the meticulous process, including reference checks, discussions with banks and vendors, and the use of digital platforms to assess a business’s online reputation.

Wiltshire emphasized, “We want to make the right choice, and we want to make sure that we are the right choice for that organization as well.” This stringent selection process reflects MPG’s commitment to maintaining a family-like atmosphere within the organization.

Shared Core Values

Integrity, honesty, and honorability are foundational cornerstones for MPG and its members. Wiltshire stated, “All of those qualities are extremely important to us,” and highlighted the organization’s proactive approach in monitoring members’ online presence on platforms such as Google, LinkedIn, Facebook, Yelp, and addressing any negative reviews promptly.

Wiltshire emphasizes the importance of the relationships MPG has built with its approximately 150 vendor partners through the Preferred Equipment Provider Program. She notes, “In March and October of every year, when our members get together, we invite those vendors to attend as well. There are great networking and communication opportunities throughout our three-day program, fostering great relationship building.” Wiltshire emphasizes the significance of these relationships, especially during critical times like the unprecedented ice storm in Texas, where the vendor partnerships proved instrumental in supporting and aiding MPG members.

MPG Vendors Show

A Commitment to Educating Pool Builders

At the core of MPG’s mission is education, and Wiltshire explains the various avenues the organization employs to foster collaboration and knowledge-sharing. She highlights the collaboration with Genesis organization and Watershape University, providing optional education for members during meetings. Additionally, the organization partners with vendor allies to offer online education components throughout the year, ensuring a continuous flow of knowledge. “We feel like on all of those touch points, we are doing everything we can do to give our members the ability to get as much continuing education as possible,” says Wiltshire.

Wiltshire elaborates on the guidelines for becoming an MPG member, underscoring the organization’s commitment to maintaining high standards. “Some of those guidelines are that the business has to have been in existence for a minimum of five years. There can be no bankruptcies in the past. We ask that they build primarily gunite pools, and there should be no other memberships with other associations in our industry, competing associations,” she explains. These stringent criteria ensure that MPG continues to uphold its reputation for excellence.

Connecting With Master Pools Guild

For emerging professionals eager to join the ranks of Master Pools Guild (MPG), Wiltshire encourages aspiring members to explore various channels to connect. “There’s a place on our website that allows you access to the contact information for our office anytime anyone would like to reach out to us.” The MPG website serves as a gateway for potential members, offering valuable insights and contact information. Wiltshire emphasizes her openness to conversations, inviting individuals to reach out and discover more about the organization.

MPG’s website serves not only as an informational hub for its members but also as a valuable search tool for homeowners seeking top-tier builders. Wiltshire details, “The guild office has the goal of providing an avenue from the consumer to our member builders. If you click through and enter a zip code or a location, it will dial you down to your nearest Master Pools Guild member builder.” This initiative underscores MPG’s commitment to facilitating connections between discerning homeowners and elite pool builders.

While the website serves as a centralized resource, Wiltshire also highlights the importance of personal connections within the MPG community. “Any Master Pools Guild member builder that someone knows is a wonderful resource. My office can give you everything you need, but if you really want insight into what it means to be a Masterpools Guild member, you will not find a better resource than an existing member.”

Welcoming The Next Generation

As the pool industry continues to evolve, Master Pools Guild remains committed to cultivating a community of excellence. Whether through the digital realm, industry events, or direct connections with current members, MPG offers a multitude of avenues for aspiring professionals to explore and join this exclusive network.

For those with a passion for craftsmanship, innovation, and a commitment to the highest standards in pool construction, Master Pools Guild stands ready to welcome the next generation of builders. The open-door policy and the wealth of knowledge within the existing community ensure that aspiring professionals will find the support and mentorship needed to thrive within the MPG family.

In the heart of California’s Central Valley, where the scorching summer sun dominates, Thomas Pools & Spas has been making a splash since 2005. Founded by Todd Thomas, this family-owned business based in Modesto, CA, has become a reputable name in the custom pool industry, specializing in the construction of residential inground pools and spas.

The journey began for Todd Thomas in the mid-2000s, as he transitioned from a role at a water district to discovering his passion for pool construction. Todd reminisces, “I fell in love with the construction of swimming pools. I worked three or four years, subcontracting, and kind of learned the ins and outs and decided I’d go get my contractor’s license and start doing it myself.”

Building Pools is a Family Affair

The family aspect of Thomas Pools & Spas became integral when Todd’s wife, Paula, joined the business to manage the administrative workload. As Thomas reflects on this transition, he shares, “Once the business started taking off, it was just getting too overwhelming for me to handle everything. So she stepped in to help me manage the business.” Fast forward nearly twenty years later and their thriving family business has become a leading name in Modesto for custom swimming pools.

Top Rated by Consumers

The Modesto Bee recently named Thomas Pools & Spas one of the best pool companies in Modesto. Todd Thomas expressed his excitement, stating, “That was awesome to hear. I think when you make a higher percentage of people happier than other companies, it reflects what you’re doing out there in the market. I’m very pleased they voted for us.”

The company’s unique approach sets it apart; not only does it excel in pool construction, but it also offers ongoing maintenance services. Thomas emphasizes, “We don’t build the pool and leave the customer behind. Once it’s finished our customers have the option to stick with us for however long they choose.” Thomas touts the fact that nearly all of his pool construction customers have become lifelong service and maintenance clients as well.

The Hands-On Approach Works

Being family-owned and operated, Thomas Pools & Spas takes pride in their hands-on approach. Todd, along with his two daughters who work for the company, ensures a personal touch. “I’m really hands-on, so I’m out there doing the plumbing, and I’m always with the customer through each individual stage of the job,” says Thomas. This level of involvement is a telling attribute of the firm’s commitment to quality and customer satisfaction.

As Thomas Pools & Spas approaches its 20th anniversary, Todd reflects on some standout projects. One noteworthy project involved designing and executing the water feature at Bass Pro in Manteca. Another extravagant endeavor was creating a backyard water park for a client with an almost unlimited budget. Todd describes the project, saying, “It took a while, but that swimming pool certainly makes my highlight reel. The whole project ended up taking probably close to five or six months.”

Finger on The Pulse in Central California

Central California, known for its warm climate, has seen a surge in pool ownership over the past few years. While the market has slowed through 2023, Todd believes this trend won’t diminish the desire for pool ownership, stating, “I think for California homeowners, it’s kind of a no-brainer that they’re going to build a pool in the backyard.” The desire to keep children entertained and safe at home has contributed to the growing popularity of backyard pools among the younger generation over the past three decades.

Knowing What The Market Wants

While fiberglass pools have gained market share, Todd explains why custom concrete pools remain the preferred choice in California. The flexibility of design is a crucial factor. Todd notes, “Because we can virtually build a swimming pool in any backyard, concrete remains the leading choice with consumers. With fiberglass pools, you’re kind of limited to a finite amount of shapes.”

Paula Thomas, who is responsible for most customer interactions, shared her insights into what’s moving the needle with today’s pool buyers. “Our customers in the Central Valley love waterfalls. We also do alot of raised decks with sheer descents. Deck jets, fire features, and laminar jets are also enormously popular with pool buyers,” Paula details. However, with these add-on features come additional costs, and Paula notes, “It just depends on the customer’s budget because when you start adding accessory features, the pool price starts getting pretty costly.” Keeping costs down while adding maximum value is something they’ve become laser-focused on.

The Post-Covid Landscape Looks Different

In a post-COVID environment, financing the dream of pool ownership has become more challenging with rising interest rates. Todd acknowledges the impact, stating, “It has affected us. It’s slowed things down a little.” The rise in both pool costs due to inflation and interest rates has prompted a shift in how customers have approached financing their dreams of pool ownership.

Another significant challenge has been the surge in material costs. Todd Thomas shed light on this issue, stating, “Just to give you an example. For one stick of one-inch PVC electrical conduit. We were paying $4 a stick. It’s $12 a stick now for a ten-foot stick.” The substantial increase in prices is not limited to a specific material but spans across various components required for pool construction.

As Todd discusses the inflationary impact, he notes, “Some things didn’t just double in price. Some things tripled.” This unprecedented rise in material costs has reverberated through the industry, affecting not only the bottom line for companies like Thomas Pools & Spas but also posing challenges for potential pool owners.

The consequences of these increased costs are tangible, influencing the overall price structure of pool construction. Todd reflects on the changes, stating, “Pre-COVID was probably around $32,000 for an entry-level pool. Now they’re probably right in the range of around $42,000 to $45,000. So you’re talking an extra $10,000 that’s just due to inflation.”

Adapting To a Changing Market

The ripple effect of these cost increases extends beyond the balance sheet. As materials become more expensive, customers may need to adjust their expectations or budgets for their dream pools. Despite these challenges, Thomas Pools & Spas remains committed to delivering high-quality projects while working closely with clients to find innovative solutions.

Reflecting on the changing landscape, Todd shares, “With the inflation, obviously the cost has gone up of the pool itself and then also the interest rate. It’s just kind of knocked a lot of people out of the market.” Despite these challenges, Thomas Pools & Spas has witnessed resilience as customers adapt, saving more or financing partially to achieve their goal of pool ownership.

As summer approaches, the anticipation for poolside relaxation and enjoyment continues to grow. We’re as excited about the upcoming swim season ahead as we are about two hot new products we recently had the chance to check out at the PSP Deck Expo in Las Vegas. Tenjam, a relative newcomer to the pool furniture space, unveiled two exciting new furniture products that promise to elevate the swimming pool experience.

The company based in central Minnesota, specializes in rotomolded, rotationally molded furniture. Since its inception back in 2013, Tenjam has made a significant impact in the outdoor education furniture industry. In 2020, the firm expanded its horizons with the launch of its in-pool furniture series, which has been a hit with consumers and professionals alike.

Mike Collins, President of Tenjam shared insights into the success, stating, “We’ve been just crushing it and coming out with lots of new products. Seems like every few months we’ve got another new product we’re launching.”

One of the standouts in their line has undoubtedly been their Shayz lounger, the flagship product in their Splash series line. “Shayz is by far our hottest product,” said Collins, “we saw almost 500% growth in the Splash series product line thanks to Shayz last year.” The success of their rotomolded pool lounger has laid the foundation for Tenjam’s continued innovation in poolside furniture.

Tenjam hopes to double down on the success of the Shayz lounger with their new Woosah chair.

Woosah Chair: Unveiling Comfort and Style:

One of the products that stole the spotlight at this year’s PSP Deck Expo was Tenjam’s Woosah chair which boasts a combination of ergonomic contouring and a slight bounce designed into the base, providing unparalleled comfort.

Mike Collins emphasized the meticulous design process, stating, “When we designed Woosah, we spent so much time on just getting the profile of that seat down. When we brought it to market, it was an instant hit but we couldn’t put it into the pool because it had a stainless steel base. Finally, we developed a Woosah chair that has a plastic base.”

Tenjam's stackable Woosah Chairs made a splash at the PSP Deck Expo.

The seat is constructed with polyethylene material for supreme impact strength and low maintenance. The stackable chairs thus far have been a hit with hotels and resorts said Collins, who predicts the product is bound to resonate just as well with residential pool owners.

“We’re definitely price competitive,” said Collins, “and the cool thing about the Woosah chair, is you can use it as your regular patio Adirondack chair, but also put it in the pool when you want to relax in the water. That eliminates the need to have a bunch of extra chairs just sitting around.”

Infinity Sun Shelf: Elevating Your Pool Oasis

The second star of the show for Tenjam was its new Infinity Freestanding Sun Shelf, a patent-pending freestanding sun shelf that promises to transform your poolside oasis.

“Our Sales Manager, John Griffard, is always coming up with crazy ideas,” said Collins, “he has a pool that’s like 50 years old and wanted to add a sun shelf to it.” The quotes he received on adding on a sun shelf started at around $25,000, which prompted the two to think of a product they could produce at a more attractive price point.

The advent of the Infinity Sun Shelf provides a hassle-free solution for adding a sun shelf to an existing swimming pool. Unlike traditional methods that involve tearing up the yard and pool deck, Infinity can be delivered, installed, and ready for use the very same day. The only requirement is adding a new plumbing line to the back of the unit.

Pool pros had the chance to check out the Infinity Sun Shelf at this year’s PSP Deck Expo

The Infinity Sun Shelf features an 80″ wide waterfall curtain, adding both visual appeal and the soothing sound of flowing water to your poolside experience. With a water depth of up to 8 inches, it accommodates various in-pool furniture brands, including Tenjam’s loungers and chairs.

Collins shared the collaboration that led to the development of Infinity, stating, “A couple of years ago, we met a group of guys from B Squared Pools. We partnered with them to actually make a freestanding sun shelf that you could just simply place at the side of your existing pool and then run a water line to it. Basically, that gives you a freestanding sun shelf at an installed price point of like $10,000 or less.”

Tenjam partnered with B Squared Pools to produce their freestanding Infinity Sun Shelf.

“We already have a bunch of preorders on the sun shelf,” said Collins, “we’re going to bring it to the Atlantic City show and that’s going to help get more eyeballs on it. I think once people see just how easy it is to set up, we’ll see sales continue to increase. Right now it’s all about exposure.”

Pool owners have every reason to be excited about the Woosah Chair and Infinity Sun Shelf, as these two innovative products bring a fresh wave of comfort, style, and transformative features to enhance the poolside experience. The two products are priced attractively to make adding pool furniture easier and more affordable than ever before.
